Post Doctoral Researcher, School of Computer Science and Information Technology

2 Years, Fixed-Term, Whole-time Post

Position Summary:

This Post Doctoral Researcher position provides an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and inclusive research team at University College Cork (UCC), working within the large-scale national CONNECT research centre, hosted by UCC’s new nasc research centre and under the supervision of three high-profile professors in the area of the Internet of Things.

The recently founded nasc research centre is within the School of Computer Science & Information Technology (CSIT). The Centre comprises approximately 50 people working on networks, security and systems research. CSIT is a large, research-focused school, participating in many major national and international research collaborations, and with extremely strong links to industry partners. We are now looking for a Post Doctoral researcher to join the CONNECT Centre team and participate in our vibrant research community here at CSIT.

The domain of distributed embedded systems can also be described as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), or the Internet of Things (IoT). Most computer systems surrounding us in our daily life are no longer the traditional personal computers but embedded devices. Recently, these embedded devices have become increasingly networked to form distributed networked embedded systems. Examples of such networked embedded systems are home automation systems, physical intrusion detection systems, smart cities or factory automation. Embedded devices are used to build critical infrastructures and we depend on their reliable operation. It is therefore essential to provide networking mechanisms that ensure reliable and dependable communications and protect these infrastructures against human error, system faults and attacks.

We are looking for an experienced researcher to join our team as a Post Doctoral Researcher. The appointee will be expected to make significant contributions to the research agenda of the CONNECT research centre, working closely with the Principal Investigators Professors Pesch, Sreenan and Roedig and with academic and industry collaborators. We welcome applications of researchers with an established publication track record, appropriate to their career stage. Candidates should have experience in Internet of Things research areas such as: 'real-time communications', 'interference mitigation', 'communication protocol design', 'cyber security' and ideally have practical experience with either networked system simulation or IoT/CPS testbeds and/or deployments. Knowledge of 5G network architecture and protocols is highly desirable. Candidates should have experience of collaborating or engaging with industry, or can demonstrate potential for doing so. In line with our Athena SWAN ambitions we especially encourage women to apply for this position.
