Connecting with Family Carers - UCC Conference

Family Caring will be the focus for discussion at a conference taking place at UCC on Thursday, September 4th next.
Titled "Connecting with Family Carers", the conference aims to bring attention to family carers; their experiences of caring, the issues they identify as priorities and their access to support services. The one-day conference will explore what we mean by caring and how we can understand family caring.  "It will bring together researchers and carers and make recommendations on caring in Ireland", explained Conference Organiser, Dr Jacqui O'Riordan, Applied Social Studies Department, UCC.

Presentations will draw on Irish and European perspectives on caring. Speakers include Kathleen Lynch, Equality Studies Centre, UCD, representatives of the Department of Applied Social Studies, UCC, The Carers Association, and a panel of family carers. The initial findings of current research on family carers in the Cork area will be presented at the conference.

The programme opens with Registration at 9.30am followed by the Opening Address by the Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Brian Birmingham and Keynote Presentation by Kathleen Lynch, Equality Studies Centre, UCD.

At 11.40am, "Carers' Needs and Access to Services in the Cork region, Preliminary findings from Research" will be presented by Jacqui O'Riordan, Feilim O'hAdmhaill and Helen Duggan, Department of Applied Social Studies, UCC followed at 12.10 pm by "Experiences of Men Caring for their Partners who have Multiple Sclerosis', delivered by Helen Duggan, Department of Applied Social Studies, UCC.  The morning's proceedings close at 12.30 with a Carers Panel.

The afternoon programme commences at 2pm with a lecture titled "Young Carers" by Cathal O'Connell, Department of Applied Social Studies, UCC followed by Brigid Barron, Founder President of EURO CARERS at 2.30pm.  The Carers Forum, Cork is timed for 3pm. The next lecture by Enda Egan, CEO National Carers Association will focus on the topic "A perspective on the National Carers Strategy".  A Summary and Recommendations is scheduled for 4pm prior to Close of Conference at 4.30pm.
