Study Abroad Calendar launched at UCC
30.01.2009

The Vice-President for the Student Experience, Mr Con O’Brien, recently launched a 2009 calendar featuring photographs taken by UCC students who studied abroad as part of their degree programme during the 2007/2008 academic year.
All students studying abroad were invited to enter a photographic competition.  The photographs taken by the students reflected some aspect of their study abroad experience.  The competition, which was organised by the International Education Office at UCC and supported by the International Education Committee, received over 300 entries.  Fourteen photographs were selected for inclusion in the calendar.

The overall winner of the competition was Jacek Woch, who studied at Shanghai University and South China Normal University in Guangzhou, China, as part of the Higher Diploma in Chinese and Business Studies.  His photograph features two skyscrapers in the Pudong district of Shanghai: Jin Mao Tower and Shanghai World Financial Centre building seen from Yu Yuan Garden in downtown Shanghai.

Second prize went to Darren Kavanagh, who studied at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, as part of his MSc (Ecosystem Conservation and Landscape Management), while third prize went to Adrian Power, a Civil Engineering student, who studied at ENTPE in France.

The calendar highlights the wide range of study abroad opportunities available to UCC students.  Through the Erasmus programme, the university has extensive links with partner universities in virtually all member states of the European Union.  UCC also offers study abroad opportunities in countries such as Australia, Canada, China, Mexico and the United States of America.

The academic, cultural, social and personal benefits of studying abroad are enormous. Feedback from returned students shows that the intellectual challenge of studying in an international environment is exceptionally rewarding and that language skills improve dramatically.

The career benefits of studying abroad have been well documented. Recent studies indicate that employers are likely to be particularly impressed by graduates who have shown that they possess the curiosity, strength of character and adaptability to obtain at least part of their education at an overseas university.

During the 2007/2008 academic year, 162 students studied abroad under the Erasmus programme while a further 26 students studied in Canada and in the United States.

Students can also avail of international work placements as part of their studies at UCC.  26 students carried out work placements abroad during the 2007/2008 academic year.  The students travelled to Belgium, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The calendar has been distributed to over 200 schools in Munster, to academic departments in UCC and to a number of administrative offices in the institution.

A limited number of calendars are available from the International Education Office, UCC.

Further information on study abroad opportunities is available on the International Education Office website: http://www.ucc.ie/international
