Applications are open for our 2024 Scholarship. 

PhD Scholarship in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, University College Cork

 

The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, University College Cork, is pleased to invite applications for a PhD scholarships to be taken up from 30th June 2024 at the latest.   

 

The PhD Scholarship in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student proposing to conduct, or already conducting, research in any of the wide range of disciplines, thematic areas and regions covered by the Department, which include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Catalan Studies;
  • Cultural Studies;
  • Galician Studies;
  • Gender and Violence;
  • Golden Age Studies;
  • Iberian Peninsula;
  • Latin America
    • Mexico
    • the Caribbean
    • Southern Cone;
  • Modern History and Politics;
  • Literature;
  • Memory Studies;
  • Theatre;
  • Translation Studies;
  • Visual Culture and Film

 

We also welcome applications from those interested in comparative topics, which might include comparisons between the literature, film or culture of different language areas, subject to the availability of relevant expertise in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for external funding during the first year.

The scholarship will cover registration fees for a full-time PhD as well as small stipend (1,790 euros) divided into 12 monthly payments. Please note that applications for full-time postgraduate study will be prioritised but part-time applications pro-rata may also be considered.

Expertise in the Dept of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies

 

Dr Silvia Arroyo 

I am keen to supervise students with interest in the Spanish Golden Age. I particularly will welcome proposals with an interdisciplinary approach in the fields of Medical Humanities (connections between early modern medicine and literature, such as monstrosity, anatomical descriptions of the body, dissection, etc), History of Science (astrology, astronomy and literature), Visual studies (sensory perception, desengaño, etc), and Gender Studies (gender binary, ideal masculinity/femininity, hermaphroditism, mujer varonil, the effeminate male, etc).

Dr Céire Broderick 

I am keen to supervise researchers with interests in Latin American Cultural Studies, community-driven research in Latin America, feminist activism, and decolonial feminist approaches, particularly, but not exclusively, in Chile. I am also interested in comparative studies undertaken between Ireland and Latin American contexts, from a feminist and cultural perspective.

Dr Helena Buffery 

I am happy to supervise students in a range of areas of contemporary Iberian Studies, but have particular interest and expertise in contemporary Iberian and Latin American theatre and performance cultures, Spanish Republican exile history and memory, translation studies and Catalan Studies. My recent supervision experience includes a number of cross-disciplinary projects involving creative and artistic research.

Dr Carlos Garrido Castellano 

My work centres on post/decolonial creative practices in the Global South; cultural activism; co-creative practices; anti-fascist and anticolonial critical thinking; the genealogies of contemporary curating and museum practice; popular culture and social imagination.  

Keywords: Activism; socially-engaged art and cultural production; postcolonialism; decolonial thought/praxis; literary studies; popular culture; contemporary creativity. 

 

Dr Yairen Jerez Columbié 

My research and supervisory interests include Decolonising Environmental Humanities and Ecocriticism; Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies; Intersectional Ecofeminism; Intercultural Communication; Postcolonial Intellectual History and Cultural Theory; Migration, Diaspora and Exile; Creative Nonfiction and Journalism, Poetry Translation and Eco-poetry. I am interested in supervising researchers working on Latin American and Caribbean cultures, histories, literatures, media and/or socioecological systems from sociocultural perspectives. I am also kin to supervise researchers with an interest in the cultural production of Latin American and Caribbean diasporas in North America and Europe, and the Catalan diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dr Cara Levey 

I am keen to supervise students with interests in Latin American Culture and History particularly, but not exclusively, the Southern Cone. My research to date has focused on Memory (particularly memorials), Justice and Activism in Argentina and Uruguay, but also encompassing the activist and cultural production (documentary, theatre, literary works) emerging from second-generation exile communities in Europe. I would be delighted to hear from students with proposals in the field of Memory and Commemoration (including memorials and social movements) as well as Second-Generation Memory and Diasporic/Exile Communities.

Dr Aisling O’Donnell 

My research areas are related to Applied Linguistics and sociolinguistics, focusing on language variation and change in global languages, translation, and intercultural communication. I am interested in supervising students with interests in Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics. I am also interested to hear from students with proposals in the field of Translation Studies and Language Teaching and Learning (ELE, EFL).

Dr Elisa Serra Porteiro 

My main research interests are the internationalization of Irish drama; translation for the stage; and contemporary theatre practice in minoritized cultural contexts, with a particular focus on interdisciplinarity and documentary theatre. I am keen to supervise research projects in any of those areas, as well as on inclusive and performative teaching approaches in CLIL.

Dr Martín Veiga 

I am happy to supervise students with research interests in Cultural Studies in the Iberian context, with particular focus on Galician Studies. I am also interested in comparative approaches between Galicia and Ireland. My own research lies in the intersection between critical analysis of literary texts, creative writing and translation theory and practice. I look forward to discussing projects on any aspect related to poetry and fiction, literary translation, ecocriticism, and travel and mobility narratives.
